Make a Fool of Yourself
Ive just returned from a week sailing the Sea of Abaco with my 17 year-old son. We were on a high adventure trip with the Boy Scouts.
Early on, our Captain told us that to get the most from the trip, we had to be willing to make fools of ourselves. We must do the right thing for ourselves and our shipmates without worrying whether it was proper, dignified or cool.
So, we made fools of ourselves all week. We sang impromptu sea shanties, wore pirate costumes, and pelted each other with water balloons.
Theres a life lesson here. Sometimes we hold back on a worthwhile venture for fear of how it would appear to others.
Start a new career at my age? People will think Im crazy?
Take dancing lessons? Id look ridiculous!
Is there something worthwhile that youre yearning to do? Would it be moral, reasonably safe, and cause no harm to others? Then maybe its time you made a fool of yourself!
