This Week's Featured Therapist: Susan Hammonds-White, EdD, LPC, MHSP
Clients who work with me find me to be a warm, thorough and experienced therapist. I focus on the client's strengths as well as the challenges he/she is facing. I believe that change is possible. I work from a developmental perspective with focus on improved communication with self and others.
Why did you decide to become a therapist?
Listening to and understanding the stories of people’s lives has always been of great interest to me. Combining that interest with the realization that the experience of being listened to is deeply healing led me to a career as a psychotherapist.
What is your specialty?
Helping couples have extraordinary marriages and helping individuals heal from trauma.
What do you enjoy most about being a therapist?
Seeing my clients find what they want in life.
Why did you decide to join 4therapy?
I like the idea of an online community of therapists who are available to clients through web search.
What is the most challenging aspect of being a therapist?
Dealing with insurance and paperwork.
What advice would you give to someone who is wondering whether they should seek therapy?
Look for goodness of fit between you and the therapist. The relationship is really what supports change.
When is it time to seek therapy?
Most people seek therapy when they are in so much pain that they can’t tolerate any more. My wish is that more individuals would seek therapy before crisis sets in; therapy offers skills and support that can help clients use their strengths to change their lives before they reach crisis mode.
