Featured Therapist of the Week: Adam Jacobson, MSW
Why did you decide to become a therapist?
It was an evolution. My professional clinical experiences began soon after I received my MSW. During these experiences, I was further drawn to the dynamic interplay of the therapeutic process.
Approximately four years later, I was working full-time while simultaneously working on my Master's in Organization Development. My plan was to move into organizational consulting and maintain a part-time private practice as well. It didn't turn out exactly that way. As time went on, I realized that organizational consulting was a decent fit for me, but not the right fit. As a result, I decided to work as a therapist full-time. It is in the role of Therapist where I am my best, most stimulated, and happiest.
What are your specialties?
I have done quite bit of work with HIV/AIDS, Adolescents, Gay and Lesbian issues, Forensics, and Work Related Difficulties.
Why inspired you to choose these specialties?
A combination of personal motivation, political motivation, and simple interest in the populations/issues.
What do you enjoy most about being a therapist?
Having a patient share their inner experience and then helping them to heal and re-organize their life is really quite an honor. It's a fascinating thing to do for a living.
Why did you decide to join 4therapy.com?
Both the patient and professional web pages are easy to use, thorough, and smartly designed. I am able to advertise myself in a way that feels like an accurate representation of my work.
What is the most challenging aspect of being a therapist?
My desire to always give my patients exactly what they need is my most significant challenge. It keeps me sharp, but also requires me to remind myself that this desire can be unrealistic.
What advice would you give to someone who is wondering whether they should seek therapy?
Learn about the process. Making phone calls, looking on the web (e.g., 4therapy.com!), and going for a consultation are ways to educate yourself. There is no obligation to go further than that if you don't wish too. Therapy can feel intimidating, but a competent clinician will help you through your apprehension and respect whenever it is you choose to stop treatment.
When is it time to seek therapy?
When you are not as happy as you wish to be.
About Adam jacobson...
Adam believes therapy can be goal-focused, insight oriented, or both. Depending on what a patient is looking for impacts this focus. Some patients may want to accomplish a short-term (specific) goal while others are looking to understand themselves better as a vehicle to change. Adam believes in working in a way that supports either of these needs so as not to impose an incorrect fit.
