When Is It Prescribed?
Marplan (isocarboxazid), is a
medication that is used to treat depression.
Marplan is a monoamine oxidase inhibitor. This medicine works by increasing the concentration of the neurotransmitters epinephrine, norepinephrine, and serotonin, thereby relieving the symptoms of depression.
This medication may also be prescribed for purposes other than what’s listed above.
When Will My Medication Start to Work?
Usually, it takes between 48 hours to three weeks to achieve the full effect.
Are There Any Drug Interactions?
Always follow your physician's or therapist's recommendations on how to take your medication. If you are taking any other prescription medications, herbal remedies, vitamins, and/or
over-the-counter medications, be sure to tell your physician or therapist.
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding Issues

Other Important Information and Precautions
Marplan (isocarboxazid) should not be administered in combination with any of the following:
- MAO inhibitors or dibenzazepine derivatives
- Sympathomimetics (including amphetamines)
- Some central nervous system depressants (including narcotics and
alcohol)
- Antihypertensive, diuretic, antihistaminic, sedative or anesthetic drugs
- Buproprion HCL
- Buspirone HCL
- Dextromethorphan
- Cheese or other foods with a high tyramine content
- Excessive quantities of caffeine
Marplan (isocarboxazid) should not be administered to any patient with a confirmed or suspected cerebrovascular defect or to any
patient with cardiovascular disease, hypertension, or history of headache.
