Claustrophobia at the Dentist's

By: Selma Holm, R-CSW

Can you picture yourself in the dentist's chair? Although your dentist is probably a nice enough person, you may want to get up and get out of there; but you want the work done. This is a conflict, and you're in a place where you'd rather not have to be.

If you are one of many people who, at one time or another, are afflicted with claustrophobia, you'll need to address your urge to leave. After all, you're there to repair and protect your dental health.

A simple, yet excellent, technique to quell your anxiety is to slow down your breath. Do this through the yoga technique of correct breathing from the diaphragm, and focus your slow breathing there.
