Your Real Family
By: Michelle Gottlieb, MFT
Who is your real family? Now, stop for a minute before you answer that question. Let’s define family. My definition of family is not, necessarily, those people that you are related to biologically or legally. Family, according to my definition, consists of those people who are supportive, nurturing and accepting of you. Family is made up of the people that you go to when you have a problem and who will always help you. Family is comprised of the people that you would support no matter what is happening in your life.
Some people are lucky enough to be born into a group of people that fit my definition of family. Many are not. If you fall into this second category, this does not mean that you are forever denied the joy of having a family. It means that you will need to make one. Look at your friends and see who fits the definition of being a member of your "family." (Take into consideration that it usually takes time for a friendship to reach this level.)
So, start your family today. You have the right to be surrounded by people who love you and support you. You have the right to love and support others. You have the right to be a member of what you feel is your real family.
