When a child is newly diagnosed with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), it is often hard for the parents to take in all the new information--and to know just what questions to ask. Referring to this list of “10 Important Questions To Ask Your Mental Health Professional About ADHD” can be helpful for you when helping your clients more thoroughly address the various aspects of understanding and tending to their child’s newly-determined needs.
- What causes ADHD? Can it be inherited?
- Can some other conditions be misdiagnosed as ADHD?
- Can my child be effectively treated without medication? If so, what are the alternative treatments?
- If he/she does need to take medication: How does it work? How long will my child have to take medication? How soon will he/she begin to feel the benefits? Can long-term use hurt him/her in any way? What should I look out for? Are there any side-effects? Are there any risks? Can my child take another medication at the same time, for example, antibiotics, while they are also taking medication for ADHD?
- If I have other children, what are the chances that they, too, will have ADHD?
- Can ADHD affect my child’s physical health in any way?
- Do people “outgrow” ADHD?
- How will this affect my child as they move into adolescence and then adulthood?
