Therapy Helped Me Deal with the Death of My Father

I think the hardest thing about seeing a therapist for me was actually starting the process, picking up the phone, making that first call and being brave enough to show up for my first appointment. I had all kinds of weird ideas in my head about what it would be like, mostly based on what I had seen growing up on television. You know, the client laying on a big dark couch staring at the ceiling, talking endlessly to some tense, disinterested looking therapist with dark rimmed glasses sitting in a chair asking a lot of questions all intended to somehow relate your problems back to Freudian theory. What I found when I went to the appointment was something much different than I had imagined it to be. I met a therapist who was a totally unbiased listener armed with the tools to assist me through the process of solving my problems and fostering my emotional growth. She was a very warm person (nothing like the television image) and there was a couch, but I sat on it instead of lying down.

I began seeing a therapist shortly after the sudden death of my father, which left me in such a deep depression that, I could hardly get out of bed in the morning. My therapist helped me to make sense of all of the emotions I was experiencing and to understand the grieving process. She created an open forum in her office where I felt safe to talk about anything because I was able to trust that everything I told her was held in confidence and that I was not being judged.

Seeing a therapist has been an extremely positive, life changing experience for me. Equipped with the insight and interpersonal skills that I have gained through my experience with therapy I have grown into a more confident person who is much more patient with both myself and with others.
